Chinese Medicine is a system of medicine that uses Acupuncture, Cupping, Massage, Lifestyle advise & Herbal Medicine.
The basic theory is that illness is due to a blockage in the flow of energy and with this in mind a practitioner will use Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine to balance and move qi or energy in the body. In China, Chinese Medicine is not considered an alternative medicine; instead it is used as either a stand alone medicine or in conjunction with Western Medicine in many hospitals. Doctors perform their rounds administering Acupuncture, Chinese herbs, Massage, Lifestyle and Dietary Advise and Western Medicine depending on the patient's condition. In Australia, although Chinese Medicine is still considered alternative our Chinese population has made Acupuncture very accessible. |
What is Chinese Medicine? |
Traditional Chinese Medicine has a rich history that spans over 2000 years. It incorporates: Acupuncture, Cupping, Herbal Medicine and diet therapy.
Chinese medicine works on the principle that Qi (energy) circulates through the body and when this energy is insufficient or becomes blocked, disease occurs. To remedy this, the practitioner will collate information from a questionnaire to assist you. Acupuncture, Cupping or Herbs will then be prescribed that addresses your concerns specifically, this is adjusted at each visit to coincide with the changes in your condition. |
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the skin at carefully selected points. We use single use, disposable needles and we are happy to say it should not hurt.
Some patients may have experienced Dry Needling and this can hurt as the training duration for a Physio to administer Dry Needling is a few days at best as opposed to four years for an Acupuncturist. There is continued debate in the Chinese Medicine community if Dry Needling should be permitted at all. A qualified Acupuncturist will ask you to give you feedback if there is sharp pain as this is not the required effect we want. Acupuncture should feel more like a very faint prick (often patients don't notice this at all and are sometimes shocked that the needle has even been inserted). What you should feel is a dull electrical or heavy feeling. |
What is Herbal Medicine? |
There are over 450 herbs, animal and mineral extracts which can be used in combination. Some herbs are as simple as ginger, rose, fennel and chrysanthemums.
